It's hard to imagine, but this location was ocean-side property 100 million years ago. Government Canyon is home to fossil tracks from two different dinosaurs, a sauropod and a theropod, who left tracks along a muddy beach, which is now preserved as rock. Take a hike with a ranger to see the tracks and learn what we know about them so far.
This hike is open to ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. Be aware that this hike includes some elevation gain and loss over rough, rocky topography. The hike to the tracks is 2.5 miles one-way, making a 5-mile round trip.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to schedule at a different time.
Meet at the Rainwater Tower outside the Visitor Center. Lots A & B will have the closest parking. The hike will leave promptly at 9:00 AM, so plan to arrive early.
The activity is free, but entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. They often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass.
Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check in with the hike leader.
