Government Canyon State Natural Area - Hike to the Dinosaur Tracks

  • When: Tuesday, March 11, 2025,  8:30 am - 12:00 pm
  • Location: 12861 Galm Rd., San Antonio, TX 78254
  • Cost: Park entrance fee $6 per person 13 yrs and older

It's hard to imagine, but our location was ocean-side property 100 million years ago. How do we know? Government Canyon is home to fossil tracks from two different dinosaurs, a sauropod and a theropod who left tracks along a muddy beach which is now preserved as rock. Take a hike with a ranger to see the tracks and learn what we know about them so far.

This hike is open to ages 10 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. Be aware that this hike includes some elevation gain and loss over rough, rocky topography. The hike to the tracks is 2.5 miles one-way, making a 5-mile round trip. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a light, packable lunch. We'll stop at lunch time for a trail-side picnic.

Meet at the Rainwater Tower outside the Visitor Center. Lots A & B will have the closest parking. The hike will leave promptly at 8:30 am, so please plan to arrive a little early.

Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Wear layers that can be taken on or off as the day's weather changes. Sturdy hiking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended.

Cancellation:
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office or visiting one of the GCSNA social media pages.
