Birding for Beginners at Government Canyon State Natural Area

Was that a kinglet, or a kingbird? Learn how you can add birding to your outdoor skills set.

Birding is an activity that people of all ages can enjoy while contributing to citizen science projects that are used by land managers and researchers all over the world. A park ranger will show you the basics of bird identification, share some helpful hints and tools, and lead a short, guided bird walk.

Who Is Invited:

Ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets, please.

Where to Meet:

Meet in the Exhibit Gallery, next to the Visitor Center. Lot A will have the closest parking.


We will provide some binoculars to share but please bring your own if you have them. Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 32 oz of water per person.
