Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms is a living history museum. Seeing this working farm showing what life was like in the 1800s is one of the fun things to do Austin with kids and families.
There are five historic sites spread over 90 acres that include Walnut Creek. Kids and families can explore different types of farms found in the 19th century as well as an Indian encampment located on the site of an actual campsite from centuries ago.
Volunteers take care of animals, do chores and tend crops. There is a working blacksmith shop and a carpentry shop demonstrating the type of skills that were needed in that time period. A walking tour brochure is available at Pioneer Farms and volunteers in costumes are usually available to talk about life on the Texas frontier. Bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes. Pioneer Farms also has special seasonal activities like hayrides and Christmas events.
