Austin - Texas State Capitol

Austin - Texas State Capitol

A visit to the Texas State Capitol has been free fun in Austin for kids and families for more than 100 years. Made of pink granite mined locally in the Oak Hill area, the Texas State Capital is one of the most beautiful state capitols in the United States. In the middle of the Texas State Capitol is the rotunda, a circular dome that reaches 266 feet from the Capitol floor. In the center at the top of the rotunda is a Texas star with the word Texas surrounding the star. The marble chip terrazzo floor under the rotunda shows the emblems of the six nations whose flags have flown over Texas.

The Capitol Information and Guide Service located in the restored Treasurer’s Business Office on the first floor of the Capitol provides brochures for self-guided tours. Guided tours of the Capitol are conducted almost every day of the year beginning in the Capitol South Foyer and concluding in the Capitol Extension. The guided tours of the Texas State Capitol are free and take approximately 45 minutes. The Capitol grounds has a beautiful park like feel with a lush green lawn and tall trees filled with squirrels and birds. Monuments and statues are found all over the Capitol grounds.
