Start your kids' new year on the right foot, enjoying the outdoors at Government Canyon State Natural Area!
Join dedicated volunteers on a FUN and leisurely family-friendly hike on the Savannah Loop trail. Participants will learn about nature, wildlife, native plants, and whatever else the kiddos find along the way!
Activity distance will be a little over 2.0 miles on a mostly flat dirt and rock trail. Strollers are not advised but smaller children can be carried in a child carrier backpack.
This hike is intended for parents, grandparents or legal guardians with their children. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.
Meet in Parking Lot C at the Frontcountry Trailhead, near the restrooms. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Trailhead between 8:30 and 8:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 9:00 AM.
Plan to arrive early, as mornings can be very busy. Be ready to go no later than 8:45 AM. First Day hikes are popular, and there is often a long line at the Fee Booth.
The activity is free but entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. They often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check in with the hike leader.
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or visit the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
