Park History

Al Rohde Park officially opened on December 12, 2009. The .8980-acre park features a playscape and benches on property donated to the City of San Antonio by local real estate developer and former City Council member Alfred William "Al" Rohde Jr. in 2008.

Mr. Rohde, who died May 25, 2010, had been in the real estate business in San Antonio since 1958 after retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps. During his service he was a combat photographer and documentary filmmaker helping produce newsreels for Time Inc. He played Uncle Sam in promotional clips for war bonds that were produced by MGM Studios. He was elected to the City Council in 1975 and served through 1977. For several years, he dressed as Uncle Sam for Fourth of July celebrations.
