Park History

Jim Mattox Park officially opened to the public on November 19, 2011. The property was donated to the City of San Antonio for use as a park by Mission del Lago Ltd in September 2009. The donor asked that the park be named Jim Mattox Park as stated in the land deed.

A 2,500-square-foot playground was added to the park in December 2012 with the assistance of national nonprofit KaBOOM! in a volunteer build that included volunteers from the McDonald's Foundation and Mission del Lago.In a political career that spanned most of a generation, Jim Mattox was elected Texas' 47th Attorney General in 1982. The office handled more than 2 million cases and won judgments totaling more than $2.5 billion for the state.

Mattox also served as State Representative from District 33-K, Dallas from 1973 to 1976 and was a U.S. congressman representing the 5th Congressional District from 1977 to 1982.

After leaving the Attorney General's Office in 1991, Mattox devoted his time to building a law practice, real estate development and he stayed active in Texas politics. He died in November 2008.
