63,000 items include DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, magazines, and newspapers. The branch has a strong Spanish language collection.

The Freedom of Expression Area is the grassy area next to the library sign. Freedom of Expression Areas are specifically designated areas on San Antonio Public Library grounds where free expression activities may occur.

Originally built in 1969, the Pan American Branch was expanded to 9,000 square feet in 1987 with funding from the Community Development Block Grant. Additional expansion was done in 1999, converting the meeting room into the staff area and a quiet reading room.
A new meeting room, restrooms, and an expanded public area were added. The most recent renovation in 2008 included new carpeting, repaved parking lot, and renovated restrooms. The branch is named for its adjacency to the highway known as the Pan American Expressway (IH 35 South).
